Why I shutdown my beer parlour, return to acting ---Emeka Enyiocha

Nollywood actor, Emeka Enyiocha who has shutdown his beer parlour, and consequently staged a comeback to his first love-acting, after many years of staying off the stage has explained why he did so.
The playboy actor was spotted at the birthday party of Fidelis Duker's wife, Temitope, which held last Sunday, at their Lekki, Lagos residence, and he was ready to share his story with anyone that cares to listen to him.
Enyiocha disappeared from the screen few years back to open a beer parlour, in Surulere. The beer parlour was bubbling until recently, when he decided to shut it down.
Explaining to Nollynow, why he shutdown the beer parlour, Enyiocha, who dressed in traditional Arabian garment, said, “I don't want to work for other people to eat.” According to him, the people he entrusted the business into the hands were mismanaging it, forcing him to close it down. He said he has no regret operating a beer parlour.
On why he disappeared from the screen, the handsome actor said he left the industry because of his family.“I left the industry because I got married and started having kids. I had more responsibilities to deal with. I needed to be closer to my family and kids so that they would not call me uncle when they see me. Marriage and family slowed me down. It definitely slows someone down except you do not want to take care of your family,” he explained. Interestingly, the actor is back on big screen to continue from where he stopped. He's currently jumping from location to another, reuniting with his kindred spirits and doing what he knows how to do best.

Night of tributes, gyration ...as Nollywood pays last respect to Bambino *Mr. Ibu's message to the late actor

IT was a night of glowing tributes and gyration, as Nollywood stars and stakeholders gathered at the popular celebrity hangout, O'jez, in Surulere, Lagos, on Tuesday, to pay their last respects to one of their own, Chukwudi Bambino Anachina, who died last month after a long battle with an undisclosed ailment.
The procession begun at the Masha Roundabout in Surulere, and terminated at Ojez Restaurant, also in Surulere, where an emotional service of songs and candlelight procession took place. It was a solemn moment as the movie stars, dressed in black T-Shirts took turns to eulogise the virtues of the man that was generally described as "a gentleman in the industry."
Leading the night of tributes was the President of Actors Guild of Nigeria,AGN, Mr. Emeka Rollas, who described Bambino's death as a rude shock to the Guild. “ He was my Chief Press Secretary and a great person to work with; the news was bruising to not only the family but equally, to the Actors Guild of Nigeria and Nollywood in general.”
“ While every death is painful, the passing of late Bambino filled me with a deep sense of loss... I have great difficulty in speaking of Bambino in past tense, we would forever treasure the memories of our association with him.” He assured the family that the guild would do everything to get all the deceased's benefits as accrued to an up to date members of AGN to them. Also, paying his own tribute, the BoT chairman of AGN, Mr. Ifeanyi Dike urged actors to take their health issues seriously, advising them to adopt the habit of going for regular medical check-ups to avoid untimely deaths in the industry. However, the mood of the night was lighten up when it was the turn of John Okafor a.k.a Mr Ibu to pay his own tribute. In his usual hilarious manner, the comic actor urged the deceased to purchase parcels of land and build houses in heaven. “Why are you people crying! Bambino please buy plenty land and build houses for us in heaven,” Mr. Ibu enthused. Immediately, the crowd burst into peals of laughter as the comic actor turned to the deceased's wife, and assured her that the industry would not abandon her and her three children. The night was preceded with an endless gyration by ex- members of Kegite club, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, where the late actor schooled. His remains would be laid to rest at his homme town 3rd of August 2018

'Being listed as one of the 20 most powerful young women in Africa by Forbes humbles me'

Would you say that telling of the African stories has changed?
I think I have done that in all my movies. If you look at “Banana Island Ghost” which is a movie about changing the way people have conversations about ghost you will understand. Also, the other thing we did with the film was to change the way you saw female lead characters. We wanted to make sure that she was funny, and outstanding like what we did in our latest film, “Lara and The Beat.” The film is about two sisters who are at the centre of financial scandal. And the financial scandal isn't about corruption, but about tax, because paying your tax is a civic responsibility. I think those are the things that our films will be addressing; family values, African values. My platform is about celebrating African heritage, celebrating family values; celebrating anything that enhances and inspires people.

Would you say your “Banana Island Ghost' movie hit a goldmine and how far did it travel?
We believe, it hit a goldmine. It travelled well, and it's still travelling. And that's one good thing about film, some films never stopped travelling. We did the premiere in London, and it showed in cinemas there. Right now, the film will be showing in festivals and the beautiful thing about film is that , it's forever. Just the same way you can watch “ Wonder Woman.” The film is over 25 years and there are films that are over 30 years and people are still watching them on daily basis. Even in 20 years, you will still want to go to the cinemas to see “Banana Island Ghost”, you want to see “Lara and The Beat” or “Bukas and Joints' and you will still be entertained. That's the type of content I want to create.

From your experience, would say African film makers are telling the African stories?
I think one beautiful thing about story telling is that it's not manneristic, rather its diverse. Everyone has his or her own way of telling the African stories. Everyone has the right to tell their own African story. I don't really get into everybody telling the African story enough. But I know the African story that I want to tell. I commend everyone out there who's churning out African stories into movies. The fact that we are all telling stories have shown the diversity of Africa. So, there is no one way to tell the African stories. I believe we are all telling the African stories.

How would you describe the years you spent as Regional Director of M-Net Africa?
During my time as M-Net boss, I received many awards and I was also recognized at CNBC Africa’s AABLA West African Business Woman of the Year in 2013. I think that only means I had crowning achievements at M-Net.

Your new movie, 'Lara and The Beat', is blend of music and movie?
Yes, it is. We brought music and weaved it together with drama. It's a musical drama, drama you see from time to time. It's not something we are bringing into the country. We know that people love Nollywood and they also love Afrobeat. Music and film are part of the major exports of the country. We wanted to bring those the two things together and that was why we cast Seyi Shay who's a musician and Vector who is also a rapper and a producer. Bringing these two people together authenticate the characters we scripted. I believe they brought the characters to life. For Seyi Shay, this is her first time to act in a movie, while it's Vector's second movie role. The film hit the cinemas last Friday and we are excited. There is always plans to travel with a film of this nature. We are already having those conversations.

In 2012, you were listed by Forbes as one of the 20 youngest powerful women in Africa. How did you feel when your name was listed among these women?
I think whenever your name was mentioned as one of the top most powerful people, you are humbled. That was very humbling. I was also honoured. I think what that meant was because we were telling the African stories. So, the power wasn't really about me, rather it was about African stories and how powerful African stories work and the influence they have to make sure that those stories were being heard all over the world. For me, I felt it was really a vindication of the fact that Nollywood and Ghallywood are making sense to people. We were working across the continent making sure that people are having conversations with African stories.

You are a very busy woman. How do you combine your work with your marriage?
I come from a family of a woman who has worked all her life. I have amazing role models, my grand mother was a successful trader. She worked and had a family. My mom was a working mom all her life, and she was married too. There is nothing I'm doing that is quite different from what other women have done for centuries. I just happened to be very lucky that I have this opportunity and I have a very supportive husband.

Are you living your dreams?
I believe that I'm extremely lucky and fortunate that I wake up everyday and do what I have to do. I do not take anything for granted.

What telling African stories through films does to Biola Alabi

Her name may not ring a bell, but you definitely cannot talk of the success story of Dstv's Africa Magic channels without giving credit to her. Biola Alabi isn't just a woman of many parts, she's a great motivator, team player and a game changer. When she assumed office as Regional Director of M-Net Africa few years back, Biola had a sole mission to change the wrong perception people had about Africa.
As a young female entrepreneur with a burning desire to positively impact on the society, Biola is pained that Africans are not doing enough to change the mindset of the western world who still believe that the continent is a place of war, hunger and backwardness. That was why, when she had the opportunity to move back home after her studies, and having worked with such big organization in the United States, as Sesame Street, which is the largest producer of children content in the world, the beautiful role model did not give it a second thought. She quickly jumped at a job offer as Regional Director of M-Net Africa, marking a turning point in the way African stories and values are projected before the rest of the world.
Biola said, she has been passionate about changing the way people see Africa.
Sharing her inspiring story with Entertainment Plus, the former M-Net boss, and now, Managing Partner of Biola Alabi Media, said telling African stories through films drives her passion. “I have always been passionate about changing the way people see Africa,”she began.
“When I was in the university, I was the President of African Students Union. We used to bring different African empowerment events into the university. For me, that has always been my driving passion. Having people ask me things I know that are not true about Africa is one of the things that drive my passion, which means that I believe we are not doing enough for the outside world to still think that Africa is a place of war, hunger and backwardness.
“That means we are not telling our own stories; we are not travelling enough; so, how do we tell our African stories, my renaissance stories and make sure that our stories are global? That has always been my passion; it has always been something I have done right from when I was the Regional Director of M-Net Africa. At M-Net Africa, we created a platform that could travel across the continent, not only for Nigerians to watch but also, the whole continent to watch the content. I think that has extremely been effective. And today, they are some of the highest channels on the bouquet of AfricaMagic channels. But at the end of the day, channels are aggregation of content; So, at the height of what I do, I create content. I have been marketing content to television stations. So, in setting up my own company, Biola Alabi Media, I knew I wanted to continue to tell the African stories. And we do that through television, film and even in marketing content. It's not addressing one way. You don't change years of misconception in one day through one platform. We do that in multiple platforms and we are introducing more platforms which we can use to our own advantage,” Biola narrated.
Though she was not responsible for the creation of Africa Magic, Biola actualized her dream of showcasing Africa to the rest of the world through the platform. Since the coming of AfricaMagic, propagating the African story has been special. From one channel, Africa Magic was expanded to eight channels, courtesy of Biola Alabi.
Talking about the creation of Africa Magic, Biola admitted that she was not the originator of platform.
“I don't think I conceived the idea of AfricaMagic. It was a platform that was already there. And when I assumed office as M-Net Africa Regional Director the channel was trying to do what they wanted to do, which is showcasing the African stories. I believe I was very fortunate, having been able to come into a place where there was a brand that was struggling and we were able to put a new life into that brand, expand and grow it. I think that brand is now a household name across the world. I don't know whether it was a household name when I came on board. But I'm very proud to be part of that team,” Alabi said, capturing the excitement and fulfillment she derives from telling the African story.creating those brands on the channels and creating screen identities for the different stars. We knew that people like epic stories and traditional stories, so we created a channel to take care of those needs. That was how we created AfricaMagic Yoruba, AfricaMagic Hausa,Africamagic Swahili, Africa Magic Entertainment and a bouquet of Africa Magic Channels, from one channel to eight channels. I believe we were able to change the face of Nollywood and help receive Nollywood around Africa and beyond. Those were the things we saw the needs for, and nobody was doing it then, she explained.
Biola Alabi ranks among the most powerful young women in Africa. In 2012, she was listed as one of the 20 youngest powerful women in Africa by Forbes, World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. She was also a recipient of CNBC Africa's AABLA West African Business Woman of the Year in 2013 and Yale World Fellow in 2014.
Before landing the lucrative M-Net job, Biola made her marks at Sesame Street which is the largest producer of children content in the world, working under the domestic programme in the US. She also worked in Marketing, Community Outreach and later worked in the International Strategy group where she accomplished a lot of projects. She also worked in South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya. While working in Sesame Street, Biola was looking for a way to move back home and that was how her work there evolved in working on a project in Nigeria. She secured the first pilot project and funding for Sesame Street Nigeria, but at the time, I got an offer from M-NET.”

Runtown risks being jailed

The last is yet to be heard of the lingering legal tussle singer Runtown and his former record label, Eric Many Entertainment, as the former has reportedly received a court summons to defend himself after he defied a Contempt Warning from Court which was served on him by the latter.
An Abuja High Court has fixed August 8, 2018 for Runtown to appear and give reasons why he should not be sent to prison for disobeying the Court Injunction made on 10th May, 2018.
According to a statement by Eric Many, ‘recall that we served a Contempt Warning from Court on Runtown on 4th July, 2018 after he defied Court Order and released a song. Rather than heed the Contempt Warning and retrace his steps, he issued a Press Release in which he argued that the Injunction had expired. The Injunction was to stop things until the hearing of our Motion seeking to freeze activities until a decision on his status (whether he had discharged his obligations to us or not) is taken. It barred him from performing or releasing songs for the time being’. The statement went on to add that, ‘the legal advice we received was that Runtown was wrong in his interpretation of the Rules of Court he relied on since he was already served with our Motion and was represented in Court on 31st May, 2018 when the Court adjourned to 27th September, 2018 to hear the Motion and the one filed by Runtown himself! To turn around after that day to proceed to do what the Order barred him from doing, and what the Motion served on him (adjourned in his presence) seeks to stop, is unjustifiable under the 7-Days Rule he relied upon. That could probably apply to a person against whom an interim injunction was obtained without more’. ‘Based on this, we have done two things: One, we have obtained a ‘FORM 49’ against him to explain why he should not be sent to prison, especially when he continued to publicize fixtures for shows in Canada, Namibia, Europe etc and threaten to release more songs, both actions in defiance of the Court Order. The application (now fixed for 8th August) has been served on him in the Punch as ordered by the Court. Two, since we will not allow him to continue to mock the Court Order we have applied and obtained a new Injunction to stop his actions to protect the Contempt Case. The new injunction bars him from his threatened defiant actions in Canada, Namibia, Europe etc. We believe the new Injunction has not also ‘expired’ and hope he respects the Court this time. Please bear in mind that our main case in Court boils down to whether Runtown has discharged his monetary obligations to us and delivered one Album to us as spelt out in our Contract. He has responded, so it will be good to allow the Court to decide what each party filed. Let both sides apply restraint. As we always say, Ericmany Limited will continue to follow the judicial process. We have confidence in the Rule of Law and will continue to patiently follow the due process until the wrong done to us by Runtown after our heavy investment on him is redressed’.

Psquare can only come back if---Peter Okoye

Almost one year after the split of singing sensation, PSquare, one half of the group, Peter Okoye has revealed why he chose to leave the music group.
Peter also known as Mr P revealed that it was disrespect towards his family that pushed him to quit. He added that his twin brother, Paul would insult his wife and kids and expect him to perform as a group.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV in Kenya, Peter said:“In life what we call family value is important. The fans want Psquare but how many times do you want Psquare to come back and break up. We’ve broken up three times and the same issue is still there. so if Psquare is going to come back we need to settle that issue. Psquare might come back, they might not come back.”
Peter said he must put his wife and children first because of the vow he made on his wedding day.
“I pulled out the plug because I felt the disrespect coming from my family (was) getting too much,” he said.
“There’s something we call marginalisation. Don’t ever be a slave because you want to be family. “Psquare can only come back if the respect comes 100 percent. I don’t disrespect my brother’s wife neither, his family but he does that to me all the time. He’ll insult me and my family in public, on instagram, and the next minute he’ll wait for me backstage for us to perform together.”
“I can’t do that. one thing is for sure, I took a vow to protect my wife and kids the day i got married and I stick to that.” Peter married Lola Omotayo-Okoye in 2015 and they have two children named Cameron and Aliona.

Wizkid ready to collaborate with soccer star, Drogba

London- based, Ivorian Afrobeat act, Afro B, featured Wizkid on the remix of his song 'Joanna.'
This remix is titled Drogba. It was named after Ivorian soccer legend, Didier Drogba who is now set to appear in the video. The soccer star reportedly shared a connection with the song- the song is named after him and it is believed that his brilliant displays on the soccer field inspired the song.
The song itself is about a hard-to-get lady whose neat rejections of the singers’ advances is metaphorically compared to Didier Drogba’s skillful displays on the soccer field, particularly in the line, “how you gonna do me like Drogba o, Drogba o Ooooo.“
The whole talk about Didier Drogba appearing in the song’s video started on Twitter after a fan suggested that having the soccer star and Wizkid in the video would do justice to the song.
He wrote, “honestly, if you could get Drogba and Wizkid in a video that would be an excellent finish.”
In response to the tweet, Didier Drogba announced his interest in appearing in the video.
He tweeted at the two artistes – Afro B and Wizkid, seeking their thoughts on his proposal and interestingly, Wizkid seemingly accepted the proposal with a response that read, “Yes, yes!!”
Earlier this year, the Ivorian artiste released the tune with its unique dance. Its remix with Wizkid is said to have boosted the song's reception. The remix has received massive airplay across Africa and recently, hit a milestone on an online music streaming platform in less than a week.

With less than two weeks to the movie’s cinematic release nationwide on July 20, the cast and other members of the production team took to the carpet to hint about the excitement that ‘Lara and the Beat’ promises.
“We had a lot of fun on set making this movie, and I am particularly excited about the cultural elements that stand out in this movie,” said Seyi Shay, who plays Lara Giwa in the movie. “Music is a big part of this movie, and to see how it was perfectly fused with this production, makes me really proud as a music artiste.”

Other cast members from the music industry include DJ Xclusive (who plays Jide), and Toni Tones (who plays Trish). “It’s great to see how this blend of movie and music has played out tonight, all the brilliance shown not only by the music cast members, but especially by the traditional Nollywood cast members as well, who really made this a pleasant experience,” said Vector.

Bring perpetrators of Jos killings to book, musicians’ body urges President Buhari

THE Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, PMAN, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to bring to book the perpetrators of the recent Jos Plateau State killings even as the body described the incident as ‘barbaric’.
In a statement signed by its National president, Dr. Gbenga Falope Jnr cautioned Nigerians not to “play into the hands of these agents of disunity.”
Falope Jnr. said: “We the National executive's and members of the Performing Musicians Employers' Association of Nigeria (PMAN) are greatly pained by the persistent violence and the total disregard for the sanctity of life in Nigeria by a group of hideously evil persons who have no iota of respect for humanity, decency and civilization.”
PMAN according to Falope Jnr “are greatly disturbed by the repeated acts of mass killings and destruction in various parts of the country. We as musicians are agents of peace and these killings point to a grand evil design by enemies of peace and Nigerian unity who have desperately been trying to bring our dear country to a sorry point. We ask all citizens of Nigerians to be wary and not play into the hands of these agents of disunity.”
The artistes’ president appealed to president Buhari to make security of lives and property top priority as promised on assumption of office. “We condole with all who have lost someone in the various acts of terror especially the recent Plateau killings and ask President Buhari to sit up on the issue of security by bringing to book the perpetrators of these barbarous mass murder and their clandestine sponsors.

What Femi Kuti Discussed With French President Macron

Afrobeat singer, Femi Kuti, has shared the details of his discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, who had enjoyed a night of music at the New Afrika Shrine on Tuesday.
He also claimed that Macron knew exactly what to expect while the night lasted.
On his Instagram page, the son of late Afrobeat originator, Fela Anikulapo, had shared some photos from Macron’s visit, captioning one of them, “The discussions I had with President Macron were short but straight to the point about the migrant crises and how to solve them.
Most importantly the importance of the future of the youths, which we both agreed on. And his love for the Shrine. #onepeopleoneworld#Ararararara”
The post generated quite a reaction from his followers, some of whom commented.
One of the respondents, Babajide @sbab97845, asked him, outright, if he told the French President that the roads leading to the shrine were fixed prior to his (Macron’s) visit, hinting that popular singer, Davido, had shared the details on his Snapchat.
Responding to the comment, Kuti said the French President didn’t come to the Shrine with his eyes closed. “I answered because you directed your question to me, but please let me ask you. You think he came to the Shrine with his eyes closed?”
For emphasis, he added, “You think he doesn’t know our problems? Now you think I don’t know our history and the atrocities France/Europe/USA have committed on our continent? You think he doesn’t have good reason to choose the Shrine over other places to go?
“He said he came when he was 23 years old and he used to work in Abuja; he’d come to Lagos to watch me perform, he loved it, he was inspired, he ran for the presidency, he won, had the opportunity to come back.
He was glad he met the same energy. He said so! You think it’s stupid to welcome him? I could go on and on with questions for you. Please think. Finally, you think he doesn’t know my views on world affairs? Please think.”

Transforming the Future: Women Mentoring Women in the Workplace

By F. John Bray, the United States Consul General in Nigeria

I am very pleased that you could take time away from your work to join us for this introduction to structured mentoring.
Mentoring is not new and I would guess that many of you have either been mentored or have served as mentors.
I have been both a mentee and mentor during my time in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Department of State.
Both roles have been meaningful to me……
The program of structured mentoring,to whichPublic Affairs Officer Darcy Zotter will introduce you, was created by the Department of State’s Human Resource bureau to address a number of challenges.
Like many of you at your companies the Department of State was looking for a way to retain its best employees and develop future leaders.
We wanted to connect our rising stars with leaders, top performers, and others.
We recognized that we needed to take steps to ensure that our leadership was both ethnically and gender diverse.
And equally important we wanted to provide a mechanism for knowledge sharing between older and younger employees.
The starting point for addressing these issues was a structured mentoring program.
The U.S. Department of State is committed to advocating for and including women in the workplace both in the United States and abroad.
The first female diplomat was hired in the 1920s but she had to resign when she married.
The “marriage rule” was not abolished until the late 1970s.
When I joined the Department the State Department workforce was 27 percent, most of these people doing clerical work.
It is now 40 percent, but still not the 50 percent we are committed to achieving.
The number of female diplomats has remained steady at 30 percent for the past decade.
The percentage of senior positions held by women at the State Department is at an all-time high – 30 percent.
Through structured mentoring programs run by Executive Women at State and our Human Resources bureau we are working to increase the number of women in line with our goal of having a workforce that reflects the makeup of U.S. society.
To support women internationally, we established the office of Global Women’s affairs in 1995.
We have identified assisting women to achieve senior positions in both the private and public sector as a priority.
One of the many programs that we have includes the Global Women’s Mentoring program.
I know that a number of Nigerian women have participated in this program, a collaboration between Fortune and the Department of State, as well as TechWomen and other programs.
Darcy is well-qualified to share this mentoring program with you. She was elected to the board of the Executive Woman at State where she actively participated in mentoring women. Additionally she was selected by the Director General of the Department of State to lead training for the Human Resources department’s 600 employees on structured mentoring for everyone.
Thank you for coming and I hope that you find the training informative and useful.

CNN meets Hollywood actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim

On this week’s episode of African Voices, CNN meets actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim who has returned to his roots to help teach aspiring thespians. Kae-Kazim discusses the future of ‘Nollywood’ and why he feels passionate about celebrating African storytelling.
Kae-Kazim explains to the programme how his acting career began: “My interest [in the theatre] happened from an early age, at 15 or something like that. I trained as an actor, went to the [Bristol Old Vic] Theatre School and then did the Royal Shakespeare Company in the United Kingdom, then the National Theatre… I did some amazing plays with some amazing people. I just walked my way though, doing amazing projects.”
Known best for his powerful portrayal of a Hutu warlord in the critically acclaimed film Hotel Rwanda and for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, Kae-Kazim is now returning to his home country to help teach young actors. He explains to the programme how this opportunity came about: “A director had come over to LA from Nigeria, had seen me work in 24, and said, ‘No one knows you’re Nigerian, you should come back, there are people who would love to see you, they’ll be surprised that you are Nigerian.’ So off the back of that I thought, you know, what a good idea. Let me go back and see what’s going on.”
Kae-Kazim outlines why he wants to share his knowledge: “I’ve come back to do some training with actors and people in production so that we can get to an understanding of the discipline really required to produce a top-notch film or television production.”
Sharing his skills hasn’t been the only thing he’s been busy doing since returning to Nigeria, he’s also been spending some time in front of the camera, making his ‘Nollywood’ debut in 2010: “The very first thing I did was a musical film called Inale. I then did a little film called Last Flight to Abuja and that was a really lovely little piece about the airline industry.”
Kae-Kazim describes why he feels passionate about supporting the film industry in Nigeria: “I am very proud of ‘Nollywood’, in terms of what the people have done. They’ve put Nigeria on the map and they’ve done this without any support of any kind and I think they must be acknowledged. I think what has to happen now is that the industry has to expand, it has to get bigger and better. It’s really about upping the technical anti of the film [and] being able to tell stories that are very true to the African voice.”
Kae-Kazim tells the programme that in order for this to happen, more needs to be done to support the industry: “No one is going to come and shoot there when the lights go off or when you need generators which are going to destroy your sound. That again is a lack of incentive to help build an industry which could be doing tremendous stuff for Nigeria.”
On why ‘Nollywood’ must continue to produce films and its’ potential to compete with the content being produced by the best in the industry, Kae-Kazim states: “We have to start to tell these stories for ourselves, to me, that’s the most important thing. You know, I’m coming back from Hollywood, not to come and say, ‘Let’s bring Hollywood here’, but to really make ‘Nollywood’, Hollywood. To inspire the fact that we should be the stewards of our own stories. We have a myriad of different stories that we can tell that are all uniquely Nigerian on one level and uniquely African on another level.”
Kae-Kazim explains that part of supporting the industry would be to make cinemas more accessible in Nigeria: “I think building more cinemas in and around Nigeria would certainly help… I would love to see more cinemas going up in places like Ajaygunlay and Surelee with affordable prices.”
He describes what he hopes to see from ‘Nollywood’ in the future: “I want to see Nigeria as the hub of African filmmaking, not just concentrating on Nigerian films, but on films that tell you about the African voice from the African perspective.”
Kae-Kazim offers some advice for aspiring actors: “Just keep loving what you do, but it’s really [down to] working hard, trying to improve not only yourself as an actor but the state of the industry. That also means [improving] the day to day discipline and making sure one is on time and focused when one is at work.”

False Assets Declaration: Supreme Court Dismisses Charges against Saraki

The Supreme Court reportedly has dismissed the remaining three charges bordering on false asset declaration against Senate President Bukola Saraki in a case before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Delivering judgment on Friday, a five-man panel of the court, led by Justice Dattijo Muhammad all upheld Saraki’s appeal, dismissing the remaining three counts against him and declaring the evidence led by the prosecution as hearsay.
According to Naija News, in June last year, the Code of Conduct Tribunal, under the leadership of Danladi Umar, dismissed the entire 18 counts preferred against the Senate President.
The federal government however, not satisfied by the ruling, approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja which in its ruling on December 12, 2017, restored three out of the dismissed 18 counts and ordered Saraki to return to the CCT to defend the three charges.
Saraki, also in turn, appealed to the Supreme Court against the part of the Court of Appeal’s decision restoring three of the 18 counts, with the Federal Government cross-appealing against the part of the decision affirming the tribunal’s dismissal of the rest of the 15 counts.
However, in its lead judgment on Friday, Justice Centus Nweze upheld Saraki’s appeal and dismissed the Federal Government’s appeal.
Justice Nweze agreed with the CCT that the evidence led by the prosecution at the tribunal was entirely baseless.
Ruling further, he held that the Court of Appeal was wrong to have restored three out the 18 counts earlier dismissed by the CCT when it agreed that the evidence led by the prosecution was hearsay but went ahead to isolate three of the counts as having been proved.
A part of the Court of Appeal’s judgment where it held that “the prosecution failed to call those who have direct knowledge of the facts sought to be proved, to testify,” was quoted by Justice Nweze.
He said the decision of the Court of Appeal’s to restore three of the counts based on the evidence it had declared as hearsay, was “equivalent to judicial equivalent of a forensic somersault”.

‘There’s no knowing how people will respond to your work’ CNN’s NimaElbagir

In this interview, NimaElbagir, a senior correspondent with the CNN recounts her experience hunting for stories, the risks involved, what drives her and what other career choice she would have made. Excerpts

Your exposé on modern slave trade in Libya resulted in a huge outcry globally. To what extent would you say you anticipated this?
Not at all, I feel that we as journalists we do the story and then we just put it out there and you can never predict how people will respond to your work. We have been so incredibly fortunate that it has struck a chord with people and it’s that that has allowed it to have impact, because it resonated with people and people voiced their upset and their horror and that forced leaders around the world to act So I don’t think that we could have predicted it because we weren’t the ones who are the reason that this work has had the impact that it has had, it’s the people out there who took the work and acted on it who are the reason this work has had the impact that it has”

Why did you become interested in the modern-day slavery/ Libya’s case specifically?
It was a story that when I first heard a refugee describing to me what had happened to him, I found it hard to believe, so unbelievable that this kind of thing was still happening. I had to go away and find out more about it. Even on what we call it, I had to go off and speak to legal experts about what is this, is it involuntary servitude?, is it modern-day slavery?, is it slavery? and legally these people came back to us and said this is slavery, in the most ancient sense and when we realised that, all of us, whether it is me or the rest of the team, or our managers who commissioned this and supported this, all of us felt that we couldn’t not do this story “

Going undercover to unravel secrets must be dangerous; how have you been able to stay safe despite the obvious hostile environments you’ve had to work in?
We have a great team, we have a great security infrastructure, we have experienced managers and it’s that support that makes the risks manageable. So I’m lucky in that sense that I operate with the resources and support of the biggest platform in the world and that’s a huge privilege and I don’t take that for granted and that’s why I continue to do these stories because I am enabled by the infrastructure that is around me to do these stories”

You recently spoke at the African Women in Media Conference. What would you say are the major challenges you’ve faced in this industry as a woman?
Access. Access to the people that can commission my stories was a huge thing that I faced as an African woman. You are out there in the field, you don’t know any of these commissioning editors in any of these international media that you’re pitching to so I think it’s just that geographical distance. I was also lucky that I had a story to tell that other people could not tell. I say lucky, but it was horrible as it was a story that unfolded around me back home in Sudan, Darfur, but in a sense it meant that the commissioners needed me so that allowed me to overcome that obstacle but I think that that is the biggest obstacle that you face as someone out there in the middle of the field, it’s not like London or New York or DC where freelancers can walk into the offices of commissioning editors. So that is probably the biggest challenge I faced”

With the increasing campaigns in support of gender parity across the world, do you think women in journalism will suffer less discrimination?
I hope so. I hope this will change things. The difference that I have seen is that people are now willing to acknowledge the existence of bias whether that bias is conscious or unconscious and we are now actually having a conversation. Whether that conversation leads to tangible change remains to be seen, but I always find that when the genie is out of the bottle, it’s very hard to put it back in”

What is your advice to young ladies across Africa looking up to you and aspiring to become world renowned journalists like you?
Just do it. Just go out there and do it. We have such a wealth of stories in Africa that need to be told and are fascinating and that people from outside of those communities or countries find very difficult to access. So just get out there and tell those stories and you will be amazed by how people respond to them”

If you were not a journalist, which other career would you have pursued?
I come from a family of journalists. I have only ever wanted to be a journalist. I truly couldn’t imagine doing anything else”

What is the one thing that keeps you going when you face challenges on the job?
