The Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare ll, has
announced plans to set up an academy of art, aimed at reviving the
Benin cultural heritage and tourism.

Monday night, when he played host to some various theatre troupes in
his palace in Benin, said works were near completion at the site of
the academy which would be named Benin Royal Academy of Performing
Art.
Apart from learning various Benin
cultural heritage, which he said was in systematic decay, the monarch
disclosed that the academy would also teach Benin proverbs and
interpretations of its traditional heritage in rhythms and arts.
He stressed further that the academy
would also serve as learning center to all categories of persons,
especially the young who were almost veering from the traditional
norms of the society.
While reaffirming palace’s support
for the use of Benin language for learning at various categories of
schools, he announced that reputable individuals who were well
grounded in Benin history, culture and heritage would serve as tutors
in the proposed academy.
He added that the refurbishment of Oba
Akenzua Cultural Centre to an international standard would rake in
more revenue for the state government, adding that the palace
authority was collaborating with well meaning individuals and
stakeholders to project Benin art and culture to the rest of the
world.
