The annual Africa Movie Academy
Awards,AMAA, always bring some insane moments, but reverse was the
case last Saturday night when this year's edition held at the
Convention hall of Eko Hotel, Lagos, amid applause.
Even though it was a night of glamour
and celebration of the best of the best in the motion picture
industry across Africa and the Diaspora, it was also, a night that
was full of jaw-droppers too.
From some serious fashion faux pas on
the red carpet to winners' moving acceptance speeches and Nse
Etim-Ikpe's applaud-able hosting strategy, the show did not
disappoint when it came to making the guests gasp, laugh and
sometimes, shake their heads in disbelieve. We bring to you some of
the show's biggest jaw-dropping moments of the night:
All the wild fashion:
As usual, any awards show in Nigeria
bring some crazy fashion, and this year's AMAA didn't disappoint.
From Ghanaian actresses, Ella Mensah and Sophia Diva whose wild
dressing caused a stir to the worst and best dressed stars on the red
carpet, the night was full of jaw-dropping ensembles. Ella Mensah’s
applied crazy make up, while Sophia had to cover her coochie with a
love smiley. The two actresses wanted some undue attention at the
show and they really got it, just as veteran actor and cast member
of the New Masquerade, Tony Akposheri was out of the ordinary in his
attire. He got everyone talking about his dressing when he climbed
the stage to present an award. To many, Akposheri was passionate
about promoting his Urhobo culture on the AMAA stage.
Ramsey Nouah's
expensive joke:
Ramsey Nouah's graceful appearance at
the event, however, put to rest his death rumour, which went viral
on the Internet last week. But this is all, the handsome actor who
was sporting designer's blazer on white bold tie, caused a stir on
stage. While presenting the Best Comedy award to Opa Williams for
his movie, '3 Wise men,' Ramsey Nouah attempted to rewrite history
after what happened at this year's OSCARS, when there was a bizarre
mix up, which saw 'La La Land' announced as winner of Best Picture
award before a correction was issued that it was ' Moonlight.' On
this note, opening the envelope, the actor made to announce AY's ' A
Trip to Jamaica' as Best Comedy, before he quickly corrected himself
as he announced ' Opa Williams' '3 Wise Men'. As if that was not
enough, Ramsey Nouah
jokingly said, 'Lagos State is the only
state in the country that is supporting the creative industry.”
Realizing that the statement did not go down well with some of the
representatives of other states' governments in attendance, the actor
muttered, “I hope other states would not kill me for this.” What
does he expects!
What Nse told AY on
stage
The show host, actress Nse Ikpe-Etim
was in her best element. Even though it was her first time, hosting
an international event like AMAA, Nse did not disappoint her fans. On
stage, she exuded a tremendous amount of confidence that many could
not help but admire her courage. Beating the imagination of her
critics, despite some of the avoidable blunders she committed on
stage, Nse did not spare ace-comedian-turned-producer, AY. She threw
jabs at him, calling him out to leave numbers alone and make a film.
' AY leave numbers alone and make a film' , she told the
ace-comedian, and immediately, the message got to AY, joined her on
stage, but then, she has passed the message. Recall that AY has
produced three popular adventure films, including “ 30 Days in
Atlanta”, “A Trip to Jamaica” and “ 10 Days in Sun City.”
Opa Williams goes sober on stage
Opa Williams, the brain behind the
comedy show, “Night of a thousand laughs” gave a sober reach out
to ailing veteran actor, Victor Olaotan, while receiving the award
for the Best comedy film, “Three wise men.” Olaotan who was one
of the actors in the movie is currently in the hospital and might
have one of his legs amputated following the car crash he was
involved in back in October, 2016. The actor was not present at the
event, but Opa Williams prayed for his speedy recovery. It was
emotional..
How Senegalese film
'Felicite' ruled the night
Senegalese film, Felicite' a movie
about a nightclub singer who grapples to pay for her son’s
treatment after a road accident was the talk of the night. The film
swept away awards in three of the six major categories, winning best
film, best actress in a leading role, and best supporting actor. When
it was time for the presentation of awards, it looked as if Nigeria
was going to lead the way, but the story changed when 'Felicite',
came from behind to sweep away three of the major five awards,
beating Nigeria's historical film , '76 and 93 Days to coast home to
victory. Many practitioners and critics expressed shock and
disbelieve, but then, all agreed that the film was exceptional. It
was one of the positive jaw-droppers of the night.
